Supplies:
  • 2 cardboard boxes
  • 1 shoebox
  • Cardboard tubes
  • Paper bowls
  • Paper plates
  • Wax paper
  • Cotton balls
  • Paint or markers
  • Crayons
  • All-purpose white glue
  • Duct tape

Many of these supplies are optional. Use the ones recommended above to help you come up with ideas for using things that you already have at home to create a castle that reflects your own style.

Instructions:
  1. Attach the cardboard boxes together with duct tape, side-by-side or with smaller boxes on top. You can keep it small or use as many boxes as you like.
  2. Now, it's time to really get creative and make the castle your own. Here are some suggestions:

Shoebox: cut a shoebox size hole and slip a shoebox (ends removed, with top taped on) into it to use as a use as a mailbox for your top-secret spooky castle messages.

Cardboard tubes: make a sound tube by inserting anywhere in the sides of the box for making spoooooooky owl sounds from inside the castle!

Paint, markers, or crayons: for designs on your castle, and castle wall bricks both inside and out.

Paper bowl: construct a spider by gluing an upside down paper bowl on the outside of your box. Color or paint the bowl and draw on legs. Draw a big spider web around it.

Paper plate: create pumpkins by cutting one side of a paper plate flat (bottom of pumpkin). Glue on box upside down. Paint or color to look like a pumpkin or jack o' lantern by adding a stem and a face.

Buttons (ages 4 and up): glue one large button on to make a make-believe doorbell, or glue on many around the outside of the windows.

Cotton balls: stretch them with your fingers to make spider webs and add them around your paper bowl spiders, windows, and corners!

Construction paper: make shadows or animal silhouettes with dark paper.

Wax paper: for curtains or window webs. Crumble up, uncrumble out flat, shred, and tape in windows.

Paper towels: also make ghastly good shredded curtains. To make or hanging paper towel ghosts, crumble one paper towel into a ball, and cover with another. Use a twist-tie to fasten closed at the "neck." (Roll any pointy ends tightly underneath!)

Aluminum foil: cut or tear to make sparkly stars and moons.

Miscellaneous craft materials: glitter, pom-poms, stickers, anything you can dream up to embellish with!
