Space Backpack Blastoff

Create this out-of-this world backpack with recycled plastic soda bottles!

How To Make This Craft

Supplies

  • 2 plastic soda bottles (2-liter size)
  • Printable Solar System cutouts (optional)
  • Yarn or ribbon
  • Duct tape
  • All-purpose white glue
  • Small prizes
  • Ruler
  • Safety scissors

Instructions

Plan ahead for the number of teams that will play this game. You will need at least one pack per team.

Before the party:

  1. Print the planets that will be glued on the space backpack (optional).
  2. Color planets, cut out, and set aside.
  3. Create shoulder straps using duct tape, by sticking tape to itself back to back and making a loop. Trim off any exposed sticky edges, to avoid hair and clothing getting caught.
  4. Tape the two plastic soda bottles together (open ends will be down), running tape through the loop so that the space pack can easily be slipped on and off like a backpack. Use small bits of tape to cover any remaining exposed sticky spots on the tape.
  5. Tie yarn to the open ends of the soda container to resemble rocket launch flames, glue planet cutouts on the pack and get ready for blast off.

At the party:

  1. Form two or more teams and set up a race running route around your yard.
  2. Place players in designated spots so that the first player on each team wears the pack to run to the next player, passes the pack to the next player who puts it on then continues running and passing until all players have had a turn.
  3. The first team to finish can win small prizes (You can make prizes out of the planet cutouts that accompany this game by printing the full color planets onto full sheet label paper, and cutting out to create home-made stickers).
