Supplies:
  • 1 sheet of black and white newspaper (note: do not use shiny or colored paper)
  • 1 tall, slim jar or drinking glass with straight sides
  • Plastic berry/produce containers (can substitute a standard gardening tray)
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds (herbs, flowers, or whatever you enjoy)
Instructions:
  1. Unfold the piece of newspaper, and lay it out flat on a table.
  2. Fold the newspaper into thirds lengthwise, creating a long strip.
  3. Place the glass at one end, with the lip of the glass in the center of the newspaper strip. Make sure that the folded edge of the newspaper is facing you, and the loose edges are at the top of the glass.
  4. Roll the glass across the length of the table while wrapping the newspaper tightly around the glass.
  5. When you've reached the end of the newspaper strip, stand your glass upright, and push the excess newspaper into the glass.
  6. Gently wiggle the newspaper off of the glass, placing the side you folded into the glass on the table.
  7. Press the folded newspaper pieces down flat to the table with you hands. You can also use the bottom of the glass to make a secure, flat bottom for your planter by twisting and pressing it into the folded pieces.
  8. Fill the newspaper planter halfway with potting soil.
  9. Sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil, and then cover the seeds with more soil until your planter is filled to the top.
  10. If you have extra newspaper sheets, repeat steps 1-9 until you've used all of your soil and planted all of your seeds.
  11. Reuse a plastic berry container as a gardening tray to hold your newspaper planters.
  12. Place your planters on a sunny windowsill, and watch them grow. Don't forget to water your seedlings so that the soil stays moist and healthy!
