Instructions

Tip: Plan to start this craft two days before your party date.  These piñatas will need at least a day or two of drying time, depending on the temperature.  Once dry, you can paint and then fill with toys to create party favors - or you can enlist your guests to fill their piñatas and paint at the party.  If painting at the party, start with this activity so you'll be sure to have it completed by the time your guests head home! Allow for 60 minutes of drying time.

  1. Set up your workspace by lining a table with wax paper. Place wax paper on baking sheet. Keep a dish of water and paper towels on the workspace for easier cleanup.
  2. Mix flour and water in the large bowl and stir until mixture has consistency of pudding.
  3. Set an inflated balloon on a baking sheet.  Dip strips of newspaper into flour mixture, using a paintbrush to thin and spread as needed.
  4. Line damp strips onto balloon vertically (they can touch but should not overlap much.)  Set aside and start next balloon.  Repeat this process until each balloon has one layer of newspaper.
  5. Repeat step 4, this time, place strips horizontally.  Staggering strips, also working with some smaller strips may be helpful to cover hard-to-reach spots.
  6. Your goal is to end with four to five layers total.  Dry for two days.
  7. To make the nest: holding an open paper lunch bag upright, slowly roll down tops, until you reach the bottom of the bag. Repeat this with each bag.
  8. Once the piñatas are completely dry, cut a golf ball-sized hole in the small end of the piñata (break balloon and remove popped pieces). If using as a party craft - let your guests fill with favors.
  9. To send piñatas home as favors, place the paper bag nests on cellophane from a roll, add the piñata egg to the nest, gather cellophane at the top, tie with pretty ribbon and voila!  Favors to-go!
